Research IT Services

Research IT offers a wide range of services to researchers and PGRs at the University. Some of these services incur costs which should be included in research grant applications after a consultation with us. Some services are free of charge or free to a certain limit. Please check the service that you wish to use and get in touch with us if you would like to discuss your requirements further.

The Computational Shared Facility (CSF)

Provides a batch-based and limited interactive on-campus platform with a large range of software for all research domains to enable computationally-intensive work. Integrated with Research Data Storage (RDS).

Research Software Engineering

The Research Software Engineering (RSE) team enhances the University’s capacity to produce high quality research software by collaborating with researchers to create correct, efficient, readable, reliable and sustainable code.

Application Support

Provides help with installing, licensing, building, or running of research applications. This includes both commercial applications used in research and open source, or research written applications.

The HPC Pool

Provides a batch-based on-campus platform with a large range of software for all research domains to enable computationally-intensive work. Integrated with Research Data Storage (RDS).

Research Data Storage

Centrally hosted, resilient, backed-up, data storage for research staff and PGR students.

Mobile Development Service (MDS)

Design, development, deployment and maintenance of mobile apps across the University with a robust governance process to ensure mobile apps released through the University of Manchester brand are fully compliant with relevant policy and law.

HTC Condor Pool

Provides a batch-based on-campus platform with a large range of software for all research domains to enable computationally-intensive work. Integrated with Research Data Storage (RDS).

Edge Compute and Satellite Storage

Provides the research community with capabilities for computationally/data intensive work where the use of centrally hosted platforms is impractical, not appropriate or must be augmented with additional functionality.

Web Application Development Service (WADS)

A full-stack and complete lifecycle option for research focussed websites with bespoke requirements building upon a centrally hosted framework and content management system with custom components.

Regional and National Compute Resources

We can help you apply for access to regional and national compute resources as well as helping you get your research up and running on these machines.

Research Virtual Machine Service (RVMS)

Provides resilient Linux and Windows Virtual Machines to research groups

Cloud Support

Provides technical support for developing and running research platforms and services in Amazon Web Services (AWS) as well as an easy route to procurement of AWS resources.

Highly Restricted Data Service (HRDS)

The HRDS supports researchers working with restricted and/or highly restricted data, such as commercially sensitive data. The service provides hardened IT platforms for hosting, processing, and collecting highly restricted data.

Research Databases

Provides professionally managed databases for unrestricted research data.

MacOS Notarization Service

Use of the University of Manchester Apple Developer Account to notarize your MacOS apps so they are permitted to run on versions of Mac OS after Catalina.

Shiny App Hosting (Pilot)

Currently a pilot service which allows researchers to host their public Shiny web apps on a centrally hosted server.

Research IT Training

Regular on campus or online training courses in a number of research relevant IT subjects for staff and postgraduates.
