Mobile Development Service (MDS)

Design, development, deployment and maintenance of mobile apps across the University with a robust governance process to ensure mobile apps released through the University of Manchester brand are fully compliant with relevant policy and law.

Service Description

MDS has a three-tier service model and you can engage us at any level as dictated by your timescales, budget and collaborators.

Lifecycle tier projects – designed, built and deployed by MDS and are the ideal choice for researchers with little access to technical expertise. MDS will look after the full technical solution for you and work with you to deliver a mobile solution for your project.

Support tier projects – benefit from MDS processes and resources while also allowing researchers to write their own code and develop the app themselves. Our RSEs will support you with regular meetings, provide on-the-job training to your nominated app developer as required and, if necessary, help with some of the development.

Deploy tier projects – are usually apps that have been developed by an external company but may also be apps developed by researchers at the University. MDS won’t touch your code but will deploy your app to the University store accounts on Google Play and the Apple App Store while helping you ensure that your app meets MDS standards plus any legislative obligations.

Charging Model

We provide informal advice and a formal requirement capture service for free and you are not committed to using us if you do not like what you hear! Lifecycle and Support tier projects are charged at an appropriate day rate and our services can be added to grant proposals if you do not already have funding in place. Deploy tier projects cost £250 for two reviews of your release paperwork and £125 per review thereafter.
