Changes to Research Data Storage

From the 6th of February 2019 the way in which Research Data Storage (RDS) is provisioned and charged for is changing. It’s important that all researchers and, in particular, Project PIs are aware of this change.

Research has been grouped into two categories:

  1. Unfunded Research - To facilitate research which is not funded, each independent researcher (e.g. academic or research fellow) is entitled to a one-off provision of 8 TB of storage at no charge.
  2. Pay Once, Store Forever (POSF) Charging Model for Funded Research Projects – A new charging model has been agreed via the Research Data Management Steering Group that enables data to be stored, and kept safely, for any length of time, without further charge. This charging model now applies to all funded research projects and is applied as follows:
  • Each project is entitled to up to 8 TB of storage at no charge.
  • Further storage is available, with a one-off charge of £687 per TB.

If you have any questions about this change to RDS please contact us or see the our RDS webpage .

This is also a good time to remind all researchers of the IT Policy regarding research data storage on local devices and platforms.
