⚡️ Topic: Introduction to IIIF for GIS and Spatial Research
In this one-hour session, we’ll introduce the core IIIF standards and demonstrate how they can support GIS teaching, research, digital humanities projects, and spatial analysis.
Getting Started with IIIF
- What IIIF is and why it has become a global standard for digital collections?
- How IIIF enables access to high-resolution maps and images from the Library’s Special Collections, and libraries, archives, and museums worldwide.
IIIF in Action
- Exploring IIIF manifests and images.
- Viewing digitised maps in Mirador and other IIIF viewers.
- Features enabled by the IIIF Image API, such as zooming, cropping, resizing and rotating images; annotations and georeferencing.
- Georeferencing historic maps using IIIF resources and Allmaps.org
Research and Teaching Applications
- Working with historic maps, aerial photography, and archival imagery.
- Discovering and reusing material from institutions around the world.
- Using IIIF to support digital exhibitions, teaching resources, and public engagement.
Ideal for students, researchers, educators, GIS professionals, digital humanists, librarians, archivists, and anyone interested in geospatial technologies, cultural heritage data, historic mapping, digital collections, and spatial storytelling.
