Networking in Research Computation and Data

Improve your network across the University in 2025 by joining a vibrant, active community of peers passionate about computation and data in research. With over 1,000 members from the University’s research community, you’re bound to discover new connections, help and support.

Since the launch of the Computation and Data in Research (CaDiR) community in Teams in 2021 it has gone from strength to strength and now has 9 active groups with over 1,000 members. The members are from all parts of the University’s research community - PGRs, academic staff and research support staff including research support officers and technicians.

But what is CaDiR?

CaDiR is based in Teams which all university staff have access to. This allows for the easy segmentation of groups by topic. Currently the groups are:

  • GIS, Mapping and Earth Observation
  • GPU Club
  • Manchester Research Software Community
  • Python User Group
  • R User Group (R.U.M)
  • Radar and RF Sensing
  • Research Data Stewardship Community
  • UoM UK Biobank Users
  • VR@Manchester Club

All members of CaDiR can see the posts in any group and are free to post, reply and interact with any of the groups. Unlike email lists you aren’t restricted to interacting with just one group - you can see information from a wide variety of groups at the same time.

“In simple terms, CaDiR is like a community noticeboard, where those interested in computation and data in research can share events, make connections, ask for help and advice, and just talk.

Unlike emails that can get left unread in your inbox, it’s easy to browse the CaDiR space and to interact with any items of interest. You never know what you might find – new training events, research grant opportunities, collaboration requests and more."

Dr. Gillian Sinclair, CaDiR channel co-ordinator

"CaDiR is about peer-to-peer learning, sharing resources, and making connections. World-class research is underpinned by innovative computation and data technology; we know how complex and dynamic that technology is. Finding relevant, contemporary, real-world examples to learn from can be difficult. CaDiR can help; it is a forum for academics and technologists to share their knowledge, practical skills, and experiences."

CaDiR Co-founder Robert Haines (Director of Research IT)

"CaDiR is designed to be a self-sustaining community that adapts to cover relevant topics. Members may join CaDiR for a topic that is important to them but often browse and stay for the rest. I see it as a brains trust, which is great for developing skills and also raising your profile in the research community.”

CaDiR Co-founder Prof Dave Topping (Earth and Environmental Sciences)
