On 5th December, the GISMEO Community hosted Maps and Mince Pies, a festive event led by Donna Sherman (Map Curator, Special Collections at the University of Manchester Library). Donna shared highlights from the University’s impressive map collection of 140,000 items and guided attendees on a tour of the special collections, showcasing treasures like a historical map of Manchester from the 1700s and a whimsical depiction of Fairy Land.
Over mince pies, participants discussed how maps can support research across disciplines, from climate studies to linguistics. With new digitisation technologies, the potential for using maps has never been greater.
