Back in September 2019 and in March 2020, I cautioned against updating to macOS Catalina (10.15). However, I have now upgraded all my Macs to 10.15.5 and, whilst it can be a pain (as described in the linked articles), Catalina works and has some nice new features (such as the ability to use your iPad as an extra screen). It is also demonstrably more secure than previous releases of macOS.
For some reason, in Catalina Apple don't include the popular editor Emacs (my editor "of choice"), but if you Google for reinstalling it, it is fairly straightforward.
Talking of Virtual Desktops, if you have the very latest version of Windows 10 2020-05 64-bit, you can now attach names to the desktops. The 2020-05 update is just becoming available but you are only likely to see it – now or in the near future – if you have a privately owned laptop that came with Windows 10.
If you open the virtual desktop view and right click on one of your desktop images (at the top of the screen), right-click and select Rename. For example, one of mine is labelled "Linux" and is where I run Windows Subsystem Linux 2 (WSL2), as previously discussed here, and which is released with the 2020-05 update to Windows 10 (64 bit only).
UoM Managed Windows Desktops won't see these features until they have been evaluated (e.g. for security) by IT Services.
