Research IT

First Conference of Research Software Engineers

Are you one of a growing number of people in academia who combine expertise in programming with an intricate understanding of research? If so then you are a research software engineer (RSE)! The inaugural conference of RSEs took place in Manchester in early September and the presentations are now available online along with many of the workshop training materials.

Over 200 delegates attended from all over the world to listen to a wide variety of presentations and to attend workshops on Docker, cloud computing, MATLAB and many other topics. All available materials are now online.

The conference was strongly supported by Research IT and many Research IT staff played an active role in making the event happen. Thanks go to Robert Haines, Software Engineering Manager in Research IT, who chaired the conference; Gillian Sinclair, Research IT Relationship Manager, who was the local conference organiser; and to Louise Lever, Research IT Software Engineer, who gave a very well received workshop on Data Visualization.

If you would like a flavour of what you missed then a recent blog post from the Software Sustainability Institute (SSI) is a good place to start. Make sure you don’t miss next year’s event by putting the dates in your diary now for the 7th – 8th September 2017.
