Research IT

Research IT Club - May

The next Research IT Club will be held on the 10th of May and will feature a welcome from the new Head of Research IT, Angus Hearmon as well as updates from our research infrastructure and software engineering teams. To attend the event please register so we know how much coffee to order in!

The presentations for this month's event, as well as the usual updates, are:

John Bowes, Division of Musculoskeletal & Dermatological Sciences, Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health

In this presentation I will illustrate how components of the Research IT ecosystem for computationally-intensive research (CIR), such as the (interactive) Computational Shared Facilities (iCSF, CSF) and Research Data Storage (RDS) service, have been integrated into the routine working practices within the Centre for Musculoskeletal Research. These platforms now form the computing infrastructure for all research projects analysing genetic and genomic data for a large number of researchers. In addition I will discuss two projects which have been made possible through the existence of other aspects of the UoM infrastructure ecosystem such as the Research Virtual Machine Service (RVMS) and the Data Processing Shared Facility (DPSF).

Mike Elliot, Cyber Security Programme Solutions Architect, IT Services

The presentation will focus on the introduction of two factor authentication and use of network security zones here at the University and how researchers can make use of this to increase their research data security

This is a great opportunity for researchers to ask questions on how two factor authentication will work in research scenarios!

The event will take place in G107, Alan Turing Building from 3 – 5pm. For catering purposes we would be grateful if you could register for this event. Registration is open until 3pm on the 10th May.

Don't forget that if you have a query about including Research IT skills and expertise in grant proposals you can come along to our Grant Support Clinics which are held every 6 weeks.
